Information Official Statement about Cyan from Ubi-Soft

For the past 4 years Ubisoft has been proud to work with Cyan Worlds on the Myst brand, and we are saddened by the decision to close the doors of their games production unit. While this event is a sad day for Myst fans and gamers everywhere, it does not in any way affect the upcoming launch of Myst V: End of Ages which is already in manufacturing at this time. Ubisoft is continuing full steam ahead with the launch of Myst V: End of Ages, the Grand Finale of the Greatest Adventure Game of all time.

While the production unit has been disbanded, Cyan will continue as a company, pursuing new endeavors for the future. In the next few weeks, Cyan is expecting to provide more information about their plans. Other than this, Ubisoft has no additional information about Cyan or their future plans.

Basically, the bad news is:
Cyan Worlds has very recently laid off all its staff. That's everyone except CEO Rand Miller and Tony Fryman. Apparently the company hasn't been wound up as Rand Miller is hopeful that something can be done to salvage at least something for the future. The next few months will be critical to this end. You can read more on these startling developments at IGN who have some information here and the full quote from Grey Dragon's blog is here.

The bit of Good news for Gamers is:
This dramatic cut back at Cyan Worlds has happened after the completion of their last game MYST V: End of Ages. As is stated in the official release, MYST V: End Of Ages is definitely completed and was put on sale on 20 September by Ubi-Soft.

You can get a copy of the demo from FilePlanet here - but be warned it's a wacking great 269.9Mb download!!

Picking up immediately where the original MYST ended, players are presented the privilege, challenge and responsibility of restoring the lost empire of the D'ni -- an ancient civilization of people who thrived for thousands of years but later met with a great catastrophe.

Like each previous MYST title, MYST V: End of Ages advances the graphical beauty and detail of its worlds with a fully immersive 3D environment. Cyan carefully crafted and combined elements of adventure, puzzles, storyline and gameplay innovation creating a worthy ending to the one game to which millions will forever compare any adventure title -- MYST.

"MYST V: End of Ages follows the MYST storyline to its conclusion -- closing the book on the Ages of MYST," said Rand Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds.

"To complete this circle of MYST we've embraced the idea of something old and something new. New in regard to pushing forward in areas of interface and technology. And old -- getting back to the simple exploration that made MYST so magical."

What Ages and Places will we See and Visit?

D'NI: K'Veer - The Island on which Atrus was imprisoned. If we are to take up where MYST left off, this is probably the place we will start. Some of the new screens [see above] clearly show both the room in which we originally found Atrus as well as another part of K'veer. The movie [link above] shows one of the six doors for the main room where we have grown so used to watching Atrus hard at work writing linking books being firmly shut.

DIREBO - a beautiful purplish blue Age, lush with trees, water and bridges. The screen above shows an area with numerous linking books set out together. It is also the starting place for the demo.

KAHLO - It looks to be a dead Age given over to fossiles and bones. MYST5.COM has screens of it in the Gallery section.

LAKI'AHN - From one of the Concept Art sketches [above] we know that there are windmills on Laki. Also, the first piece of music to be released is called "Laki Arena".

MYST Island - Appears in the E3 Movie. From our D'ni books and history we know Atrus and Catherine, with Ti'ana, lived there until the latter died. Also, the screen [above] showing the three journals together, clearly the middle one is a bound linking book for MYST.

NEGILAHN - A vibrant rain forest Age. MYST5.COM has screens of it in the Gallery section.

NOLOBEN - The first screen released for the new game was the beach there. It is also the main location for the game demo.

TAGHIRA - An Age of Ice and beauty. MYST5.COM has screens of it in the Gallery section.

TODELMER - Another of the first screens shows a giant telescope there.

TOMAHNA - I believe the Dagger Screen [above] is situated in Cyan's creation of Atrus & Catherine's home after they left MYST Island. It will be great to see how the Cyan team really envisaged this location in the Mexican desert. Ubi Soft did a nice job for Revelation, but technically it was way too advanced and who ever would build a place with a dangerous connecting swing bridge, especially a family with a new baby daughter?

Additional details and information will be announced here when I've played enough of the game to give totally correct info.
